Keeping safe

Health, Safety and Insurance

The health and safety of our staff and the general public is of paramount importance in all we do, whether in our yard, on the road, on site or at the top of a tree. We ensure all staff are competent in the tasks they undertake and with the tools and plant they use.

We understand and comply with all relevant safety standards applicable to our sector. Our equipment conforms to the health and safety regulations set out in LOLER (The Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations) and PUWER (The Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations) and undergoes regular inspections as required.

Our team are trained and certified to NPTC (National Proficiency Test Council) standards, which covers all arboriculture tasks and machinery operations. All tree works are carried out to BS3998 standards (British Standard for Tree Work – Recommendations, 2010). BS3998 gives comprehensive guidance on the management of trees and overgrown hedges, taking into consideration the soil, growing environment and the requirements of nearby trees.
For works that require road closures or traffic management we have Chapter 8 qualifications, which enable us to legally and responsibly manage traffic flow to ensure the safety of our staff, pedestrians and motorists.

We are registered with ROLO (Register of Landbased Operatives) and CSCS (Construction Skills Certification Scheme), which provide a framework for skills development and progression through a structured card scheme that incorporates landbased qualifications, health and safety training and assessment. The card scheme gives assurance to employers and clients that labourers, installers, supervisors and managers have achieved a recognised landbased qualification.
We are also a part of the SSSTS (Site Supervisor Safety Training Scheme), accredited by CITB (Construction Industry Training Board). This is a nationally recognised safety qualification required by many major contractor groups for all supervisors working on site.

Lantra (National Training Organisation for the Land Based Industries) provides training in tree climbing techniques and machinery use, which we have accessed for machinery-based operations. We also have ITSSAR (Independent Training Standards Scheme and Register) qualifications to cover the operation of our telehandler and lorry loaders.

Exceeding standard industry requirements, we have £10 million public/products/employer’s liability insurance, plus £5 million pollution liability insurance.
